A rather stout, free-floating, submerged, aquatic plant with flowering scapes 15-25 cm long, growing from the water. Stems submerged, all alike, 15-45 cm long;
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It grows in bog pools and lakes, quite uncommonly, throughout the British Isles and often not flowering.

Fleurs : jaune vif, 3-12 par grappe; pédicelles d'un rouge brun, dressés à la maturité; calice d'un rouge brun, à lobe supérieur ovale-lancéolé, l'inférieur largement ovale et échancré; corolle de 15-18 mm, à lèvre supérieure entière, égalant le palais étroit et faiblement strié, l'inférieure à bords réfléchis; éperon conique, égalant la moitié de la corolle
Floraison France : Mai-septembre.
Flowers: 5-10 mm diam., in a lax, bracteate, few-flowered raceme; calyx lobes ovate; corolla yellow, upper lip as long as palate, lower lip with lateral margins deflexed at right angles
